National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Tomorrow is Orange shirt day or National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Burnaby ECD Table is committed to our journey of learning and unlearning about the past and ongoing harms of colonization as well as the strengths and perspectives of the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island. This journey is on going and not contained within a single day. As part of our commitment to Truth an Reconciliation we have been exploring and reflecting on the First Peoples Principles of Learning and how they relate and can guide our practice working with children and families.

But how might we recognize Sept 30th? It is more than just wearing orange. We must first learn and be aware of the truth behind this day. It is heavy but vital reading. We encourage you to read some of the Reports from the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation.

How can I talk about reconciliation with my kiddos? We have found a great video that explains it from CBC Kids below. Watch it before sharing to figure out if it right for your kids.
