During the winter, we tend to hibernate inside with our children. Fireplaces, storybooks, educational television and crafts are all wonderful but eventually every member of the family feels the need to stretch their legs and get some fresh air.
In Burnaby we are so lucky that we have many amazing and varied park spaces to visit even when the weather is a little bit frightful.
Here are a few of our favourite parks in Burnaby to play in and explore. Just bundle up, throw some snacks in your backpack and head out!
If your kids are good walkers, Squint Lake Park has a meandering trail that isn’t too challenging for little legs. Once everyone finds a good walking stick, take turns listening for different wildlife noises and the quiet trickle of the creek in this peaceful park.
Burnaby Lake Regional Water Park is smack dab in the middle of the city and a perfect place to meet friends on a windy day. It’s also a wildlife sanctuary so bring your binoculars to spot some great blue herons and majestic bald eagles. Impress your kids with the fact that this lake was created by a glacier 12,000 years ago. That’s even before Grandpa was born!
If your little ones love the nautical life, head straight to Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park. Your crew members can play on a pirate ship, wave to passing boats and even drop a fishing line into the water to see if they can catch dinner!
There are many more sprawling green spaces in Burnaby for you and your family to visit. Whether you want to fly a kite, play I Spy, or keep warm with a rousing game of Tag, Burnaby’s incredible selection of parks makes it easy to stay active this time of year!
